Your stop, your time. Obtain as much information as possible and wait for the right time to stop a vehicle. You can always try to plan ahead before the stop. You initiate the stop, not the suspect.
When initiating a vehicle pursuit always remember to immediately call out your location and direction of travel and keep it updated when it changes.
If you are the only unit, you are responsible for keeping the location of the pursuit up to date. If two units are pursuing, the secondary unit will take over communications.
Vehicle pursuits and any type of pursuit are of an extremely dangerous nature. To initiate a pursuit you must have a viable reason due to the danger it poses, e.g. arrest warrants, felony speeding, violent crimes etc..
During a pursuit there shouldn't be any more than 4 units attached to the pursuit unless its for a high value subject. This doesnโt apply to other units that may be setting up to block off traffic at intersections and units setting up for spike strips. BCSO Supervisors can attach themselves to a pursuit if there is over 5 units unless there is already a Supervisor attached.
It is strictly against policy to go in opposite lanes of traffic. This should only be done IN A SAFE MANNER and if it is to apprehend a suspect wanted for a felonious crime and is a danger to society.
Once a pursuit has initiated, approximately 10 minutes must pass before any termination techniques are executed. Any maneuver conducted must be authorized by the current Watch Commander. Upon initiation there shouldnโt be more than 4 law enforcement units attached to the pursuit, unless there has been an officer in distress involved or related to the scene.
